WA Dept. of Natural Resources Strategic Plan
Dear Friends:
As you know, over the last few months the Department of Natural Resources has been involved in a concerted process to develop our strategic plan. In November, we shared draft elements of the plan and asked for your review and comments. The response from that request has been remarkable. Thank you for your thoughtful review and comments. Your participation and ideas thus far have been the foundation for what I know will be a successful product that we all can use to achieve our important mission.
I want to take the opportunity to update you about where we’ve been, where we’re going and what still lies ahead. The end of 2009 was spent reviewing countless comments generated from meetings with DNR staff and more than 600 responses to an on-line survey. While the sheer volume of this input was a bit intimidating, it has been critically important in how the mission, vision and goals have evolved.
We are still on target to release the draft strategic plan on January 25. We’ll post it on our website and will begin a public comment period that will go through February 19. We’ll also host a series of public meetings in early February (see below) and issue an additional survey. I hope to have a final plan issued by mid-March. You can get more information about the public meeting dates, times and locations, as well as download the plan and link to the survey at: http://www.dnr.wa.gov/BusinessPermits/Topics/OtherInteragencyInformation/Pages/em_dnr_strategic_plan.aspx.
I am pleased with the progress we have made so far in identifying and prioritizing activities for the next five years. I share the concerns expressed by many regarding the economic situation that currently faces the state of Washington. However, I feel that if we plan now for better times, we’ll be ready to move forward in a much more successful manner.
Again, I appreciate your comments and encourage you to remain engaged in this process.
